Our Mission
The Center is Harrisonburg's first dedicated Yoga and Pilates studio. In our welcoming atmosphere students are encouraged to reach new levels of strength, flexibility and relaxation, stemming from their centers. We believe that students can step into their classes feeling encouraged, safe and challenged so that they can begin to realize their full potential, both in class and out. A regular Yoga, Pilates and/or Nia practice can truly be part of a journey to good physical, mental and spiritual health as students joyfully move from the inside out.

Suzanne
McCahill Perrine is the founder/director of The Center, Harrisonburg's first dedicated yoga and Pilates studio. Suzanne is a former dancer and teacher and was drawn to Pilates in 2002 because of the immeasurable possibilities it could offer anybody who was willing to intelligently work with his or her body, whether trying to get in shape, look better, feel balanced or recover from injury. Suzanne received her Pilates certification in the spring of 2003 through Stott Pilates and has been teaching since.
Suzanne is also blessed to have received the title "Anusara Inspired" yoga teacher and believes in encouraging students to have fun, relax and enjoy the splendid journey that yoga offers them both on their mats and in their lives. Suzanne has been fortunate enough to have studied with such inspirations as John Friend (Anusara's founder), Desiree Rumbaugh, Suzie Hurley, Amy Ippoliti, Douglas Brooks, Kate Miller and Jordan Bloom. Suzanne is now nearing the end of 18 month-long yoga training and continues to find more joy in her life since discovering Anusara Yoga and sharing it with others.

Melissa Creighton began
practicing yoga in 1995, and on her yogic path has experienced
a variety of styles such as Integral, Anusara, Ashtanga,
Vinyasa, and other hatha-based yoga traditions. She has had
the fortunate opportunity of attending trainings, intensives,
and workshops taught by world-renowned teaches such as David
Swenson, Tim Miller, David Garrigues, Mark Darby, John Friend,
and more. The Ashtanga Yoga tradition as taught by Sri K.
Pattabhi Jois has become her main passion in recent years
through its dynamics, specific breath-emphasis during the
entire sequence of positions, and deep introspective nature,
and she has been teaching based on this style since 2003.
Of this, Melissa says, “The teachings can be found
in many books, videos, etc., and although I incorporate these
techniques into my classes what I really hope to spread is
the joy, passion and those beginning steps toward Self-realization.
I just love that as a teacher I get to be a witness as others
breathe life into their own practices.” Originally
from New York , Melissa recently relocated to Harrisonburg
from Charlottesville , where she continues to teach regularly,
and wishes to extend her love for this practice to you as
well.

Erin Murray is very thankful for the opportunity to instruct Nia at The Center. Erin’s Nia journey began in her sophomore year of college after sustaining a devastating leg break that would eventually change her life forever. Having been a hard core traditional athlete all her life, Erin could no longer run, play soccer, or look the way she once did. An identity crisis, depression and body hating ensued. Desperately searching for an emotional outlet and physical health, she happened upon Nia through her university in Seattle. Presented with the opportunity to experiment with different extracurricular activities, Erin went to Dance Underground (a beautiful studio in Seattle) to participate in her first Nia class. It was love at 1st dance (Sorry to be corny). After being a dedicated Nia dancer for 2 years, and experiencing health (mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual) unlike ever before, Erin got her White Belt certification in July 2007 from Nia founders Debbie and Carlos Rosas in Portland. Nia continues to be a healing and strengthening power in her life. She looks forward to sharing the joy of movement and connection to self and others that Nia has the power to catalyze. All are welcome. Nia is for everybody. Let’s dance. Until then…enjoy this quote, "I can't imagine anything but music that could have brought about this alchemy. Maybe it's because music is about as physical as it gets: your essential rhythm is your heartbeat; your essential sound, the breath. We're walking temples of noise, and when you add tender hearts to this mix, it somehow lets us meet in places we couldn't get to any other way." - Anne Lamott
